Alice in Wonderland

28 Oct – 19 Dec 2027

For Christmas 2027, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is proud to present the world premiere of Sarah Foster-Sproull’s Alice in Wonderland.

From the White Rabbit to the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter to the Cheshire Cat, the larger-than-life characters of Alice in Wonderland have transcended the pages of the beloved novel to become part of the timeless fabric of growing up.

At the heart of the classic tale is Alice herself: independent, curious and endlessly brave. Whether conversing with a giant caterpillar or navigating a cutthroat game of croquet, Alice remains true to herself in a topsy-turvy world.

Drawing on the wonder of a childhood steeped in reading, drawing and outdoor adventures, RNZB Choreographer in Residence Sarah Foster-Sproull will create a surreal world onstage, fusing the iconic Tenniel illustrations with pop-up
books, painted backdrops, puppetry and theatrical illusion. The enchantment of Wonderland will be brought to life not with digital magic, but in a celebration of the craft of live theatre.

Sets and costumes will be created by Emma Kingsbury, whose gorgeous designs for the RNZB’s Cinderella dazzled audiences in 2022. Music will be specially composed by dance-specialist Eden Mulholland and will be performed live in all venues by an onstage ensemble of multi-instrumentalists.
